Tan Sau to Wu Sau Transition with Lateral Stepping in Wing Chun
In Lesson 12, we focus on the transitional mechanics between Tan Sau and Wu Sau, synchronized with lateral footwork. This lesson introduces a dynamic drill that sharpens your coordination between the front arm (Tan Sau) and rear arm (Wu Sau)—a core skill in close-range Wing Chun combat.
Two Key Transitions Explained
This drill features two distinct methods for transitioning between Tan Sau and Wu Sau:
1. Under the Arm Transition – The Wu Sau slips beneath the front Tan Sau, allowing a smooth exchange while maintaining forward energy and connection.
2. Over the Arm Transition – The Wu Sau travels above the Tan Sau, creating a layered defensive structure while preparing for immediate counteraction.
Central Line Control and Arm Coordination
After learning the two transitions, you’ll continue with a practice that strengthens coordination between your front and back arms, using additional Wing Chun techniques. Emphasis is placed on:
• Maintaining the exchange along the central line, whether horizontally (proximity of arms) or vertically (raising/lowering trajectory).
• Executing tight, compact movements that maximize efficiency in limited space.
Why This Drill Matters
While Tan Sau is often considered a basic Wing Chun technique, when used in this advanced context—within fluid arm exchanges and footwork—it becomes a deceptive and highly versatile maneuver. This lesson will significantly enhance your ability to move laterally with purpose, while staying grounded in your tactile awareness and centerline control.
