Techniques drilled in Lesson 5 include:
1. High and Low Gaun Sau
• Description: The Gaun Sau is an essential Wing Chun blocking and deflecting technique. The difference between high and low Gaun Sau is based on the target area of the attack (high being the upper line, low being the lower line).
• Focus: Angle of the block, positioning, and use of leverage for maximum deflection.
2. Right Man Sau and Left Tan Sau
• Description: Man Sau is an open hand technique used for deflecting, while Tan Sau is a palm-up technique often used for both defense and setting up offensive moves.
• Focus: Execution of these techniques from a strong stance, focusing on fluidity and transitions between hands.
3. Jut Sau and Tan Sau (Djum Shou)
• Description: Jut Sau is a quick, direct motion that disrupts your opponent's structure, while Tan Sau in the Djum Shou variant is more focused on power and leverage.
• Focus: Understanding the rapid change of direction (Jut Sau) and the continuous flow (Tan Sau).
4. Double Tan Sau
• Description: A technique where both hands execute Tan Sau simultaneously, often to intercept or defend against simultaneous attacks.
• Focus: Synchronization and maintaining balance while executing two defenses at the same time.
5. Double Huen Sau
• Description: Huen Sau is a circular motion used for deflecting incoming strikes. The double version is executed by using both hands in tandem for greater deflection and control.
• Focus: Timing and fluidity, as well as the ability to redirect multiple strikes.
6. Double Tok Sau
• Description: Tok Sau involves pushing or striking an opponent’s hands up from below with base of your palms. The double version amplifies this action for both hands to forcefully push your opponents hands up and open him for further attack.
• Focus: Developing lifting power in the arms, along with maintaining a strong base.
7. Double Lower Lying Palm
• Description: This technique focuses on using both palms to defend or strike in a downward motion, typically targeting an opponent's midsection or lower line.
• Focus: Leverage and power transfer through both arms, while ensuring stability in the stance.
8. Double Upper Lying Palm
• Description: Similar to the lower palm but aimed higher, this technique is for deflecting strikes or attacking the upper line.
• Focus: Ensuring proper body alignment and control while executing both hands in sync.
9. Double Jut Sau
• Description: Double Jut Sau involves performing the Jut Sau technique with both hands simultaneously, disrupting your opponent's structure from both sides.
• Focus: Efficiency and fluidity in using both hands for simultaneous offense and defense.
Key Concepts to Discuss:
• Force Direction: Explanation of how the force is applied in each technique and its relation to the centerline.
• Inch Power: Discuss how inch power plays a role in close combat, where small, precise movements can create large amounts of force.
• Stickiness: A defining trait of Wing Chun, where the practitioner stays connected to their opponent to maintain control.
• Transfer of Force Through Both Arms: Demonstrating how both arms can work together in both offensive and defensive scenarios, maximizing effectiveness while maintaining fluidity.
